Planning for a MySQL Cluster Setup

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to setup a MySQL Cluster infrastructure for a major educational institution. Theoretically, the deployment is a straightforward process. Of course like most IT projects, the actual roll-out process is only a minor concern.

The process of gluing together the components and making sure they stick solidly is where the challenge is more extreme.

In this article, I’m not going to discuss how to setup a MySQL Cluster. There are tons of documentations regarding this procedure already available. What I’ll be touching on is presented more as a deployment strategy, preparation and maintenance guide.

By the way, if your organization is interested in deploying a MySQL Cluster infrastructure, please note that HTNet Solutions provides this service and would be more than happy to get yours up and running.

Early Morning Trip to Zoo Johor

Last Saturday was a school holiday replacement day and I had to send my son to school. Since it replaces a Friday, it means that I have about five hours of time in hand before I need to fetch my son back.

I decided to head down to Zoo Johor (State Zoo of Johor) because my last trip there was more than 20 years ago. It also provided me with a quick and cheap way of practising my animal photography because the admission fee is only RM2.00.

Johor’s Sultan Passed Away

I’ve received news of Tuanku’s passing at 7:15pm from various reliable sources. However, I decided against posting anything before the official announcement.

As a Johorean, I will be observing the full mourning period of my sovereign. Al-fatihah.

Urban Street Photography: Johor Bahru City

Last Sunday, I went on a street photography with friends from AlphaJB (group of Sony Alpha DSLR users in Johor Bahru) around town. Shooting started at around 8:30am and finished at noon. We began our exploration of Johor Bahru from the main post office and walked around the vicinity of Jalan Dhoby and Segget Walk.

I’ll be sharing some of the pictures I took during the photo-walk in this post. Looking forward to your comments!

Malaysian Budget Hosting Faceoff: Exabytes vs Shinjiru

Many of us experience running our own web sites through blogging. The first steps are pretty straightforward; register with Blogger or WordPress.com and put our thoughts into writing. Then we learn a few tricks like embedding images and videos into our posts.

Later on, we start to explore other blogs for ideas and inspirations; leaving comments along the way. By this time, we will get comments on our blog posts too… and I’m sure it’s exciting to start getting regular readers on our blogs!

What many people discover next though isn’t as exciting as the first few steps. Some got irritated by the lack of control of their free blog hosting service. Some would like to monetize their content through ads but couldn’t do so as the terms and conditions of their free blog hosting provider doesn’t allow it.

So what’s next? Self hosting is where most people move on to… but who can we trust with our web content? How much is it going to cost?

In this post, I’m going to review the offers made by two of Malaysia’s leading web hosting provider; Exabytes and Shinjiru.
